Along our road to the Central African Republic, passing through
Tunisia, Southern Algeria, Niger, Benin, Nigeria, and Cameroon,
we will create a report using video and photographs which
will illuminate the dreams that inspired young Africans during
the middle of this century and those that inspire young Africans
today.
From colonization to globalization and from political sovereignty
to economic dependence, Africa has been chronically unstable
during the past few decades. The transformations and the crises
within each country have significantly influenced the lives
of the African people. For those under the age of 25, their
perspectives have changed as much as their ideologies. There
are many examples that define the African sphere of influence
on its youth such as young Tunisians invested in tourism,
Algerians rich due to their land yet poor due to their civil
war, and Touaregs of Niger torn from their identity.
In this report, we will use words and images to recreate
the reality facing Africa's youth. We will recreate the evolution
of the views that young Africans hold of themselves and the
world as a result of their origins, era, social class, and
access to knowledge. We will recreate this evolution in a
way that is true to life by telling personal stories instead
of collective stories and by putting the destiny of the individual
before that of the group.
In each of the various cities along our route, we will take
advantage of the presence and support of volunteers and researchers
to challenge our points of view. Their personal experience
as well as their work will undoubtedly bring additional insight
to our report.
Our project will conclude with the production of a documentary
made for television and a book of photos with commentary.
Our personal success will be attained through the enrichment
of people and the abolishment of borders between civilizations,
especially during a time when a simplistic vision of the relations
between nations and xenophobia are emerging once again.
